Identifying Which Rat Species You’re Dealing With

Northern Nevada is home to three rat species that commonly conflict with people: the Norway rat, the roof rat, and the Desert Woodrat. Knowing which one you’re dealing with matters because their habits, preferred locations, and access points differ significantly.

• Norway rat: Stocky build, blunt nose, and a tail shorter than its body. Norway rats tend to burrow near foundations and occupy lower levels of a structure.
• Roof rat: Slimmer frame, large ears, and a tail longer than its head and body combined. These are agile climbers that nest in attics, ceilings, and other elevated spaces.
• Desert Woodrat (packrat): A native Nevada species with large eyes, hair-covered ears, and a distinctly furred, bi-colored tail with white feet. Unlike Norway or roof rats, packrats don’t live in colonies. They build large nesting middens from debris and are common in rocky terrain and brushy areas adjacent to developed land.

Common signs of an infestation include droppings, gnaw marks, greasy rub marks along baseboards or walls, scratching or scurrying sounds at night, and shredded nesting material in storage areas or wall voids.

Why Rats Move into Reno Properties in Fall & Winter

As temperatures drop in the high desert, rats seek the warmth, food, and shelter that homes and businesses provide. Properties near major travel corridors like I-80 and I-580 see notable rodent pressure due to the movement of goods and the density of surrounding development. Once rats are searching, they don’t need much of an opening. A gap roughly the size of a quarter is enough for many rats to squeeze through, which makes small cracks around utility lines, foundation seams, and attic vents practical entry points.

Health Risks & Property Damage from a Rat Infestation

Rats can spread Salmonella, Leptospirosis, and rat-bite fever through droppings, urine, and direct contact. Nesting near stored food or food prep surfaces creates contamination risks that aren’t always visible. Beyond the health concerns, rats gnaw on electrical wiring, insulation, and structural wood. Damaged wiring in an attic or crawl space can create a fire risk, and the cost of structural repairs grows the longer an infestation goes unaddressed.
